Ryan is a Seattle-based lighting and scenic designer for dance, theater, and opera. His design work has been seen at Pacific Northwest Ballet, Velocity Dance Center, Spectrum Dance Theater, On the Boards, Book-it Repertory, Intiman , Seattle Public Theater, Village Theatre, ArtsWest Playhouse, Strawberry Theatre Workshop, and Café Nordo, among others.
Ryan was born and raised in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington with a BFA in Visual Communication Design. He was a founding company member of Seattle-based experimental theatre troupe The Horse in Motion, and was a resident designer at Washington Ensemble Theatre from 2016-2024.
Ryan has twice been the recipient of Gypsy Lee Rose awards for Outstanding Lighting Design; in 2018 for The Nether, and 2019 for Feathers & Teeth, both at Washington Ensemble Theater. He has toured nationally with Spectrum Dance Theater. Frequent collaborators include Donald Byrd and Drama Tops.
Outside of theater, Ryan is a freelance lighting designer, lighting director, and moving light programmer for concerts and events.
